Overview
Ultrasonography, also known as ultrasound, is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. It is commonly used to examine organs, tissues, and blood flow. In medical practice, ultrasound is utilized for monitoring pregnancy, diagnosing abdominal conditions, assessing the heart, liver, kidneys, and other organs, as well as guiding certain medical procedures. It is safe, painless, and does not involve radiation, making it suitable for a wide range of patients. Ultrasound is a vital tool in early detection and monitoring of various medical conditions.
Benefits
•Non-invasive: Ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive procedure that doesn’t require incisions or injections.
•Radiation-free: Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasonography doesn’t use harmful radiation, making it safe for pregnant women and children.
•Real-time Imaging: Provides real-time images, allowing doctors to evaluate the condition of organs and tissues quickly and effectively.
•Early Diagnosis: It helps in the early detection of medical conditions such as tumors, cysts, and abnormalities in organs.
•Guidance for Procedures: Used to guide biopsies, injections, and other procedures for accuracy.
Procedure
•Preparation: Depending on the area being examined, the patient may be asked to fast or drink water before the procedure.
•Gel Application: A gel is applied to the area of interest, which helps transmit sound waves.
•Imaging: A transducer (probe) is moved over the skin to capture the sound waves reflecting off organs or tissues. The images are displayed on a monitor.
•Duration: The procedure is generally quick, lasting between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
Treatment
•Diagnosis: Used to assess conditions such as pregnancy, abdominal pain, kidney stones, liver disease, and more.
•Guided Procedures: Ultrasound is also used to guide needle placements, biopsies, and drainage of fluids.
