Overview
It is an allergic condition that cause sneezing, congestion, itchy nose and sore throat. Pollens, mold insert can cause hay fever symptoms. Symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, irritation of nose, throat, mouth and eyes.
Who gets allergic rhinitis?
Allergies are inherited. You are more likely to have hay fever if you have a parent or family member with allergies. People who have asthma or eczema are more likely to develop hay fever.
Common Allergens
- Dust mites that live in carpets.
- Pollens from trees, grass and weeds.
- Mold Spores.
- Cockroaches including their saliva and waste.
Symptoms
- Nasal Stiffness.
- Itchy nose, throat and eyes.
- Headaches, sinus pain, increased mucus in nose and throat.
- Fatigue and malaise.
Diagnosis
- To measures antibodies to specific allergens, IgE level test.
Treatment
- Antihistamines – They work by stopping histamine that your body releases during an allergic reaction. They can cause drowsiness and should be avoided taking with alcohol.
- Decongestants – Relieves congestion in nose and sinuses. They can cause increased blood pressure, headaches, trouble in sleeping and irritability.
- Leukotrienes Inhibitors – side effect includes change in mood, skin rashes.
Precautions
- Avoid touching your face and rubbing eyes.
- Close windows in your home and car during spring and summer.
- Enclose pillows, mattresses and box spring in dust mite covers.
- Wash your hands often.
- Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes from pollens when outside.
